    • Enlisted into the Confederate Army, 22nd Calvary. According to the enlistment records, had dark hair, black eyes, dark complexion and was 5'8" tall. " He was mustered in at Fort Washita, Chickasaw Nation, on January 15, 1862.
      He was in Taylor's Regiment, Texas Mounted Rifles, and had enlisted for a 12-month period. He served from January 15, 1862 to December 31, 1862 as a teamster. On December 28, 1862 and in April 1862 it was noted on his pay slip that he was absent without leave. In June it was noted that he deserted."

    • After his parent's death, Elijah left Illinois with Nathan Marion Bullard, his cousin (who was 18 years older). Elijah was illiterate, he did have many talents. "One of his daughters could show him a picture of a dress and he could cut it out without a pattern." He designed and fitted a saddle for his wife to carry her midwife and medicine supplies.
