In 1870, at Worcester, NY, he married Orcelia Wright Rury, who had two children from her first marriage: Othelo, born 1861 and James, born 1865. Both born in New York. Orcelia's first husband died in 1865. Lester and Orcelia's first child, Frank, was born in New York in 1875. Sometime between 1874 and 1876, Lester (at age 28) and his half brother, DeWitt Clinton Marks (at age 20) left New York to seek their fortunes in Kansas. They went to NYC and worked for a while before signing on a cattle boat. They worked their way around to Corpus Christi, Texas. They rode up the Chisolm Trail with a herd of horses ending up at Dodge City, Kansas. Lester homesteaded near Spearville, Kansas. In 1876, Orcelia and her three sons went to Western Kansas. Ford Lester, was born near Spearville, Kansas on September 27, 1876. In 1878, their third child, Avis May, was born in Ford County, Kansas. The 1880 Census of Wheatland Twp., Ford County, lists the family: Lester, Orcelia, Frank, Ford Lester, Avis May, Othello Rury, James Rury and DeWitt Clinton Marks living on the farm. About 1887, the family moved back east to near Windom, Kansas. In March 1890, the family moved to Mulhall, Oklahoma where Lester owned and operated a Livery Stable.
