      GARTHWAITE
      "Aunt Mary" Garthwaite
Mary A Garthwaite, 87 among the last of the original pioneers of Sedgwick county, (Kansas) died Sunday morning July 27 (1957) at 11 oíclock at the Wichita hospital. She had been making her home with her son C. J. Garthwaite, at 1802 West Second. She was born February 11, 1860, in Wabash County, Indiana.
Mary Garthwaite was the daughter of William H. and Martha A. Hamilton, and in 1869 when the family emigrated to Kansas they lived in Towanda a few months that winter, while the father was building a log cabin on the homestead just inside the Sedgwick County line. This home which the family moved to in the spring of 1870, was the first log cabin built in Lincoln (township.)
At her marriage November 3 1878, to David B. Garthwaite, son of a neighboring pioneer, the couple purchased the old homestead which was her home for the next sixty years. Generous in hospitality and every helpful neighborly virtue she became "Aunt Mary" to the community. April 10, 1914, her husband died. Of the three children William T., Martha E. Garthwaite Blackford, and C. J. only the latter survives. There are seven grandchildren and one brother Peter T. Hamilton, now of Ontario California.
Funeral services were held at ten oíclock July 30 at the Bethel Church of Christ southeast of Whitewater,
(Claypool) and interment was in the Green Valley Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Louie, Charlie and John Sanders; Will Hawes, Herbert Paul and Frank Claypool.
Relatives and a host of friends and neighbors will cherish the love and friendship she so freely gave in the memory of their dearly beloved "Aunt Mary."
