Notes |
- Ruth Tackitt recalled a few stories that her grandfather George told her about his father, Albid. George called his father Pa and said he had a terrible temper. One time George was sitting a fence while his Pa and another man were talking. George had something to add to the conversation but when he did his Pa hit him so hard he fell off the fence.
Another time when George was a boy the family needed corn meal and had to take some corn to the grist mill. Albid loaded a horse with corn and put George on the horse with no saddle. Along the way to the grist mill George couldn't keep the horse from eating. The horse ate so much that he eventually layed down and started rolling. Then some wild hogs were trying to eat the corn. George ran to the mill, told some men what had happened and they came to help. Then they ground the corn mill and George went back home.
Ruth said that George didn't get his first pair of shoes until he started school. One of his chores was to carry water from the spring.
When George was still a baby, the family went to a church revival. They took a quilt for the children to lay on. During the service George rolled off but no one noticed. It wasn't until the family was nearly home that they realized they didn't have George so they went back and there he was.
parents of 8 children only 6 living in 1900.,
George Washington had 300 or 400 acres and put numbers in a hat and had his kids draw for which 46 acres they would get. One person got 45 acres and the homestead.
Sylvia took us by the area and the barn is still standing but none of the land is still owned by Bauman's. This land is between Elam and Latch but in the Shady Grove district., [1, 2, 3]
