| Notes |
Divorced:
- (Divorce case #5981 Labette County, Kansas District Court, Oswego, Kansas. Divorce was granted by the court on Feb. 22, 1899 with a waiting period of 6 months before remarriage by either party. Just a note on the divorce petition and settlement: Evidently Newt didn't show up for any part of the proceedings as the notice was published in the official county paper and said Address Unknown. I assume it was published in the paper because they could not deliver papers to him not knowing where he was. Lena sued for a divorce on the grounds of neglect of duty and extreme cruelty. She was granted custody of the children and the right to all the farm equipment they owned. (He had sold the corn crop that was harvested before he left and took all the money with him leaving her with no money for food or clothing for herself and her children according to the petition for divorce.) [Source: Pat Francis]
Married:
- Lena was Newt’s first wife.
